This Friday we're paying homage to Dame Zaha Hadid. Zaha was a prolific architect — revered for her conceptual, neo-futuristic building projects and her unrelenting passion to carve a different path in design.

She has designed numerous extraordinary buildings over her illustrious career like The Riverside Museum in Glasgow, the Heydar Aliyev cultural centre in Baku, Azerbaijan and the London Aquatics Centre, as well as collaborating with like-minded design brands like Chanel and Louis Vuitton.

Dame Hadid became the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004, she also received the Stirling Prize in 2010 and 2011 and in 2012, she was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Hadid was a true trailblazer and revolutionary force and often found herself and her designs misunderstood - a fact that never lessened her pace or shortened her vision.

WHY A&TB LOVES DAME ZAHA HADID:

· Always pushed boundaries

· Iconic leader in architecture

· Role model for women in architecture and in general

· Unwavering Self Belief

· Her determination

· Experimental Attitude

· Visionary

· Fearless & Brave

· Extraordinarily talented

In February on BBC Radio 4, Hadid said: “I don’t really feel I’m part of the establishment. I’m not outside, I’m on the kind of edge, I’m dangling there. I quite like it … I’m not against the establishment per se. I just do what I do and that’s it.”

Now that’s a serious Femme Crush – may she rest in peace.

Don’t let this deter you though – we want to encourage and help other not-so-handy individuals to throw caution to the wind and pick up that sledge hammer, but to do so with slightly bent knees and a hard hat firmly on your head.

April and the Bear blog attracts devoted readers from across the globe, we won 'Best Business Blog' at the Image.ie Blog Awards 2014 and were nominated for the 2014 The BOPS and The Blog Awards 2014 AND we were nominated for 'Best Online Shop' in the Irish Times Best Shops Competition 2015.
