This Friday we're crushing hard for Countess Markievicz.

With the 1916 centenary this year, there is an abundance of information about the Easter Rising and the people that were involved in it - one of whom was Countess Markievicz. Markievicz was an Irish politician (Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil ), revolutionary nationalist and a suffragette who despite being born into a wealthy family, dedicated her life to women's rights, helping the poor and freeing Ireland from British rule.

WHY A&TB LOVES THE COUNTESS:

One of the first women in the world to hold a cabinet position Her advice on fashion stands to this day, "Dress suitably in short skirts and strong boots, leave your jewels in the bank and buy a revolver"

  • Took out loans and sold all her personal possessions to run her soup kitchen to feed the poor

  • Fearless

  • Re-shaped Ireland

  • Followed her beliefs

For a look at more ladies we dig — jump here OR wait until next Friday! And if you'd like to tell us who you are crushing on and why, PLEASE DO, pop your comments below. Let's spread the love on FEMME CRUSH FRIDAY!

April and the Bear is an award-winning DIY/ lifestyle and interiors blog. Dublin-based interior enthusiast/ blogger and entrepreneur Siobhan Lam shares her own experiences of doing up her home in Portobello ... be warned it involves head wounds, bruised shins, fire engines and never-ending mountains of dust. Don’t let this deter you though – we want to encourage and help other not-so-handy individuals to throw caution to the wind and pick up that sledge hammer, but to do so with slightly bent knees and a hard hat firmly on your head.

April and the Bear blog attracts devoted readers from across the globe, we won 'Best Business Blog' at the Image.ie Blog Awards 2014 and were nominated for the 2014 The BOPS and The Blog Awards 2014 AND we were nominated for 'Best Online Shop' in the Irish Times Best Shops Competition 2015.
