Femme Crush Friday: Mindy Kaling

Today I'll mainly be counting down the minutes until the weekend - WHAT WHAT! But before that I'd like to dedicate a small part of my day and yours to one of my favourite women of all time.

Mindy Kaling. Okay that was a little weak... MINDY KALING!!

It's very easy to LOVE Mindy - if her on-screen characters are in anyway similar to her (and OBVIOUSLY they are), she's as hilarious as she is adorable. But we're not here to squeal over fictional characters - oh no, real women only please. So let's take a minute and go back.

One of the things I adore about Mindy is that she WORKED to get where she is now, she started out as an intern on the Late Show with Conan O' Brien after which she wrote, starred in and produced Matt & Ben - an off Broadway show which was really well-received and yes, female Indian-American Mindy portrayed Ben Affleck. Then Mindy was hired to write for the American Office, she was only 24 years old and the only woman on a staff of eight. She worked on the show for six years and in that time also created and portrayed self-obsessed Kelly Kapoor on the show, as well as racking up titles such as director and executive producer, not forgetting numerous Emmy nominations and wins for her writing and acting skills. SHEESH. It's a lot right? And we haven't even got to her very own show yet, which as I'm sure we all know is called the Mindy Project. Not the MOST original name in the world but let's give Mindy a break - she's clearly been pretty busy with other things (see above). I adore the Mindy Project and not just because it's hilarious and colourful and shiny but because it stars Mindy Kaling as the LEAD. Yes she writes the show and produces the show which is GLORIOUS but for me the most awesome thing is that I get to enjoy Mindy in a lead role. She's not playing the kooky best friend or the annoying ex-girlfriend - she's playing the funny, endearing, successful, sexually adventurous, beautiful Mindy Lahiri. What's so crazy about that I hear you ask. Well she's not the typical lead role 'type' aka she's not a size 8, her hair isn't blonde and her skin isn't white. She's a dark-skinned babe and when I was growing up as a mix-race gal, that was something that I would never have seen on a television show, never mind in a leading role. I love that another ideal of 'beauty' and 'young woman' is being celebrated on our screens and that this fact isn't ever really addressed on the show because HELLO, why the hell wouldn't there be a TV show about a quirky Indian-American female Doctor and her mental love life.

WHY A&TB LOVES MINDY:

  • INTENSELY GOOD WRITER

  • AWESOME COMEDIC ACTOR

  • DETERMINED

  • SELF-BELIEF

  • SUCCESSFUL BOSS LADY

  • DOESN'T WANT TO GET HITCHED

  • HER HONESTLY (HAVE YOU READ HER BOOKS?)

  • SHE'S WRITTEN TWO KICKASS, FUNNY TOMES

  • BABE

  • KIND OF A NERD - WHICH MAKES ME LOVE HER MORE
